The BNB Chain team has officially launched opBNB, a layer-2 scalability solution, on the mainnet, marking a pivotal moment for decentralized app development. This new technology, based on Optimism’s OP Stack, promises enhanced transaction speeds and lower costs for dapps, fostering Ethereum compatibility. Following rigorous testing phases and a limited mainnet release, opBNB is now set to address key blockchain challenges, aiming to revolutionize scalability and cost-effectiveness for developers and users alike.
opBNB: Enhancing BNB Chain’s Scalability and Dapp Efficiency
The BNB Chain development team has just launched opBNB on the mainnet for scalable decentralized applications (dapps). This achievement came after a rigorous testing phase aimed at assessing the overall reliability and functionality of the network. Built on Optimism’s software package known as OP Stack, opBNB is a layer-2 scalability solution designed to accelerate transaction speed and reduce the cost of dapps. The technology enables the deployment of Ethereum (ETH)-compatible dapps at the off-chain layer, then secures transactions through the BNB Chain using Optimism’s rollup technology.
The project was built with the aim of solving some of the long-standing issues around blockchain scalability and fees, making the technology more accessible and functional for developers and users. The testnet of the layer-2 solution started in June, followed by a limited mainnet release in August, where a select number of infrastructure providers had exclusive access to scale the network.
Arno Bauer, Senior Solution Architect at BNB Chain emphasized that scalability and security were of utmost importance in the development process. “Before opening the mainnet to the general public, strict criteria were met,” Bauer said, highlighting the platform’s focus on performance and security metrics. The opBNB layer-2 network, consists of five separate but interlinked networks. These include BNB Chain, layer-2 solutions such as opBNB and zkBNB, BNB Beacon Chain which is responsible for staking and governance, and BNB Greenfield, a data storage-only network.
