An online scam using deepfake technology, featuring a fake version of Apple CEO Tim Cook, tainted the recent launch of Apple’s iPhone 16. Scammers seized the opportunity during this high-profile event to broadcast a live video on YouTube, displaying an AI-generated image of Cook promoting a fraudulent crypto investment scheme.
On September 9, an X user named BearPig exposed the existence of the fake live stream on YouTube, operated by an impersonation account posing as Apple. The stream featured the AI version of Tim Cook, urging viewers to send cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, Ether, USDT, or Dogecoin to a “contribution” address, with promises of receiving double the amount sent.
“Once you complete the deposit, the system will automatically process and return double the amount of cryptocurrency you deposited,” claimed the fake Tim Cook during the stream.
Scammers Take Advantage of iPhone 16 Launch Moment
This incident coincided with Apple’s official Glowtime event on September 10 at 12 AM WIB, where Apple introduced its latest iPhone 16 series.
A YouTube channel mimicking Apple US broadcast one of the fake streams, complete with a verification checkmark, making it appear official. The stream recorded over 355,000 viewers, though most were believed to be bots used to enhance its legitimacy.
In response, TeamYouTube issued a statement via their official X account, acknowledging the fraudulent stream and urging users to report suspicious videos. YouTube removed the fake stream and terminated the account responsible for the scam.
This case adds to a growing list of scams leveraging deepfake technology, particularly those targeting public figures during major events. In August, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) also reported the shutdown of the Quantum AI website, used in a fake crypto investment scam.
The site defrauded victims by falsely claiming endorsements from major U.S. celebrities like Chris Hemsworth and Elon Musk, offering large returns with a minimal initial investment.
