In the ever-evolving world of gaming, digital security has become a primary concern for players. Recently, a mysterious group of cybercriminals has shaken the gaming community by releasing spyware malware targeting gamers, especially those using cheats in popular video games like Call of Duty. This malware not only steals identities but also drains Bitcoin holdings of players, raising serious concerns within the community. According to a report from @VXUNDERGROUND, a trusted source in the malware market, this infostealer has affected hundreds of thousands of players, and the numbers are continuously rising. Alarmingly, not all victims are cheat users. Some players using software for latency improvement, VPNs, and certain control tools have also been impacted.
Malware Hits Gamers: Extensive Impact and Response
Call of Duty cheat provider, PhantomOverlay, was one of the first to notice suspicious activities after several users reported unauthorized transactions. Elite PvPers, a rival cheat provider, also confirmed similar attacks, indicating the scale and seriousness of this threat. The losses caused by this malware extend beyond data theft. Some victims reported that their Electrum wallets were emptied, adding to the negative impacts of this attack. However, the total amount of stolen crypto remains uncertain.
In response, Activision Blizzard, the developer of Call of Duty, has collaborated with cheat code providers to assist affected players. It’s reported that over 3.6 million Battle.net accounts, 561,000 Activision accounts, and 117,000 Elite PvPer accounts have been infiltrated by this malware. PhantomOverlay has revealed via a broadcast message on Telegram that the number of hacked accounts continues to rise, indicating that this threat is far from over.
