Sony Officially Launches Layer-2 Blockchain Soneium

Sony Block Solution Labs (BSL), a subsidiary of Sony specializing in blockchain technology, has officially launched the mainnet for Soneium, an Ethereum-based layer-2 network.

According to an official statement on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, Sony revealed that the mainnet launch follows the successful debut of the Soneium testnet in August 2024, which recorded 15.4 million active wallet addresses and over 50 million transactions on its network.

The Soneium network is built using Optimism’s OP Stack and Superchain technology, aiming to bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 while fostering a more inclusive, accessible, and creative platform.

Sony BSL described Soneium as an open-source public blockchain that is accessible to everyone without restrictions.

Focus on Content Creators and Communities

Soneium primarily targets content creators, fans, and communities. Sony BSL aims to address various challenges faced by creators, such as copyright issues and fair value distribution between creators and fans.

The network is designed to simplify blockchain interactions for creators and their audiences. A key initiative within the ecosystem is an NFT-based marketing platform called the Fan Marketing Platform, alongside an incubation program named Soneium Spark.

Since its inception, the Soneium Spark program has registered up to 1,700 participants, with 32 applications selected to receive development support within the blockchain ecosystem.

With the mainnet launch, Sony BSL plans to expand Soneium’s presence by exploring new frameworks and use cases that integrate digital and physical experiences.

According to Sota Watanabe, Director of Sony BSL, Soneium empowers creators and users to step into a new era of the internet by making blockchain interactions more intuitive and applicable to real-world scenarios

From Network Labs to Block Solutions

Sony BSL was established in 2023 in Singapore as a joint venture between Sony Group Corporation and Startale Group Pte. Ltd. Originally named Sony Network Communications Labs Pte. Ltd., the company rebranded to Sony Block Solution Labs in August 2024, coinciding with the introduction of the Soneium testnet.
