Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, is currently under official investigation in France as part of an inquiry into the messaging app’s alleged involvement in organized crime.
According to a CNN report on August 28, French prosecutors revealed that Durov is being investigated for various alleged offenses, including illegal transactions by organized groups, money laundering of criminal proceeds, and refusal to provide information to authorities.
Not Allowed to Leave France
Durov is now out of jail but remains under judicial supervision, with a required bail payment of EUR 5 million (approximately IDR 85.7 billion). Additionally, he is prohibited from leaving French territory and is required to report to the police twice a week.
This investigation suggests that prosecutors believe there is sufficient evidence to warrant further inquiry. However, as of now, Durov has not been officially charged with any crimes.
Durov was detained at Le Bourget Airport in Paris on August 24 under a warrant related to the lack of moderation on Telegram.
The investigation into Durov includes various allegations, such as claims that Telegram has been used for criminal activities like fraud, drug trafficking, and the distribution of child pornography. Under French law, he was held for a maximum of 96 hours before charges were to be filed.
Telegram has previously clarified that its platform complies with European Union laws, including the European Digital Services Act. They emphasized that the moderation processes on their platform meet industry standards and are continuously being improved.
Telegram also strongly denied the claims that they and Durov are responsible for the misuse of the platform, stating that their CEO “has nothing to hide” and frequently travels across Europe without any issues.
“Telegram serves nearly one billion users globally as a communication tool and a crucial source of information. We hope this situation will be resolved soon. Telegram is always with you all,” the company concluded.
